OPP asks boaters to be aware of poker run this weekend – Kingston News

Boaters planning to be on the St. Lawrence River on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020 have been asked to take extra care, says a statement from Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dated Thursday, Aug 27, 2020.

High performance boats will be participating in an annual poker run. The route this year is different than in years past, OPP say. The run begins in Gananoque, with stops at Ivy Lea, Wolfe Island and Brockville before returning to Gananoque. Start time is 10:30 a.m. and the run should end by 5:00 p.m.

According to the statement, this run is not considered a race, but some of these boats can reach speeds well in excess of 100 km/h. Parts of the route are very busy and congested channels within the Thousand Islands area. The OPP is warning small craft operators and others to be aware of these fast moving boats that will be passing through the area in both directions.

The OPP is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the boating public, as well as participants in this event, by providing high visibility police patrols and enforcement.

The OPP will work in collaboration with their policing partners, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Brockville Police, the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as the organizing agencies, to provide a safe and secure event.
