GPL Results, Standings, and Schedule After Summer Series Heat I: Americas Sweeps Eurasia in the Cube

Welcome to the weekly rundown of the Global Poker League here on PokerNews. In this space, all of the past week's results from the GPL will be listed, followed by league standings and a look at the following week's schedule.

This week the GPL moved over into the live realm after eight weeks' worth of online play, with the much anticipated debut of "The Cube." As streamed on GPL's Twitch channel and with all of the archived matches available to watch on the GPL site, players this week took part in heads-up matches while standing facing one another inside the large, glassed room, which made for a unique experience for the players as well as for those watching at home.

Much like during the first eight weeks of this inaugural GPL season, these live heads-up matches involve participants playing three games worth three points each. However unlike those first eight weeks, the Summer Series of six week-long "heats" will involve interconference matches as all six teams in both the Americas and Eurasia Conferences take turns competing against each of the six teams in the other conference. This week's Summer Series Heat I saw the Americas Conference dominate, winning all six of the heads-up matches including sweeping two of them.

Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame helped get things started on Monday by representing the L.A. Sunset versus the Paris Aviators' Fabrice Soulier, with the actor winning two of three games versus the French pro. Then Jonathan Jaffe got six points as well for the San Francisco Rush after taking two of three from Dzmitry Urbanovich of the Moscow Wolverines.

The Las Vegas Moneymakers' Scott Ball followed by similarly winning two of three from Chris Moorman of the London Royals. Then came two straight three-game sweeps as Martin Jacobson (Montreal Nationals) won nine points versus Randy Lew (Hong Kong Stars) and Felipe Ramos (Sao Paulo Metropolitans) also won all three games versus Jeff Gross (Berlin Bears).

Heat I then concluded yesterday with Kevin MacPhee of the New York Rounders making it six for six for the Americas Conference, winning two of three games against the Rome Emperors' Timothy Adams.

Interestingly, the one-sided results this week meant the standings in both conferences remained exactly the same as the Americas teams each picked up six or nine points while the Eurasia teams added three or none. The Montreal Nationals continue to enjoy a decent-sized lead in the Americas Conference over second-place L.A. Sunset, while the London Royals did reach the 100-point mark this week to stay in front of the Moscow Wolverines in the Eurasia Conference.

The Eurasia Conference won't have to wait long to seek revenge, as Heat II begins today with a Sunday doubleheader of matches. At 2 p.m. ET it will be PokerNews Strategy contributor Jonathan Little of the Las Vegas Moneymakers taking on George Danzer of the Paris Aviators. Then at 4:30 p.m. ET Marc-Andre Ladouceur of the Montreal Nationals will play Igor Yaroshevsky of the Moscow Wolverines.
