Prominence Poker PC hands-on: Addictively fun for poker enthusiasts
505 Games has teamed up with Pipeworks Studios to deliver the new poker video game Prominence Poker, which is currently out on Early Access and will soon be coming to PS4 and Xbox One. If you are a poker enthusiast, then you will quickly latch onto the easy to learn mechanics and alluring gameplay of Prominence Poker.
When they start out, gamers will be able to create their own character and customize many different aspects of their cosmetic look. The 3D character creator will enable players to change nearly every aspect of their player from their hair, to facial hair, body and clothes.
Gamers will also be able to customize the different taunts or actions that their player has. From what I saw, these seem to only include happy animations such as dancing at the poker table, clapping or waving. Taunts seem like an area that can grow a lot, so it'll be interesting to see what other actions are put into the game further down the line.
Personally, it'd be great to see negative reactions to things that happen throughout your time at the table. Might I recommend a facepalm animation or table flip? Okay well, maybe the table flip might be a bit too much, but it would be nice to express displeasure as much as you can enjoyment.
The look of the poker room I played in wasn't just a mailed in area, as Pipeworks created a nice aura of what poker players usually feel and hear, and it hits a lot of the things you would typically find in a casino. You are at, what seems like, the main table of this casino and you have total control of the camera, though you'll most likely want to keep the camera facing all of the players so you can see if they have any tells.
A lot of the nuance Pipeworks is looking to develop into the experience deals with the things players do and don't do at the table. Always looking at your cards before you bet or checking them after every turn card might give something away to other players. It was hard to tell if this would be something that actually takes hold, but the concept itself absolutely fits real-world poker.
The game is free-to-play and from what I played has Texas Hold'Em as a mode. It's unclear if other types of card games like Omaha will be added, but traditional poker players will be able to pick this game up easily and start playing.
Another element that remains unknown is how the free-to-play elements will come into play for those who decide not to spend real-world cash. The single-player campaign will be a source for players to earn additional chips, should they loose some on the multiplayer side of things.
Gamers will compete through the single-player campaign and take down the lower-level players until they have built up enough bankroll and reputation to face-off against the game's faction leaders. Prominence Poker will also reward gamers for checking in each day with a certain amount of chips.
I'm interested to see how Prominence Poker will evolve in the future and what it looks like when the experience finally does come to consoles. 505 Games is the publisher behind the new title and Pipeworks Studio is the developer. The game is out now on Early Access and will be out on PS4 and Xbox One soon.
