BRAZIL AMONG THE WORLD’S TOP POKER DESTINATIONS

The world’s most famous and renowned poker tournament has arrived in Brazil for the first time. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) takes place in São Paulo, and more than 3,000 players will fight for a $1 million prize. The WSOP is considered to be the equivalent of a World Cup to the poker industry. The series is organized in just a handful of countries outside the United States. From now on, the WSOP Brazil circuit will be a permanent feature in the world calendar of the series and will be broadcasted by Fox Sports.

The WSOP Brazil consists of 27 events until next week, and the winners will have a seat in the Las Vegas event – poker’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. The main event will have a 4,000 Brazilian Reais buy-in (just over $1,200). For more professional events, the buy-in is no less than 20,000 Brazilian Reais (roughly $6,000) – the highest even practiced in Brazil.

Brazilians are more and more interested in online poker competitions, and the number of players in events hosted in Las Vegas has increased each year. No Brazilian has ever won the WSOP final event – but a São Paulo-born man named Bruno Foster got close to it in 2014. He got to the November Nine – the last table of the worldwide event with the nine best players of the series. Foster finished in eighth place, taking almost $1 million home.

Founded in 1970, the WSOP became extremely popular through the years, and more than 100,000 people play in the final Las Vegas event, including many celebrities. As a matter of fact, many of the players who take part in the event are more interest in the famous players rather than the hefty prizes. Among the high-profile players, we can cite footballers Ronaldo and Gerard Piqué, and actors James Woods and Aaron Paul.
