Taking Your Poker Playing to the Next Level

Ok, so you’re not a complete rookie when it comes to poker. You’ve got quite a bit of experience under your belt and you’ve won some games in the past. It may be that you’re happy with where you’re at but there’s probably a nagging thought at the back of your mind that you could be better.

Sure, you don’t want to be a huge money winner in the WSOP Main Event but just taking your game up a notch or two would be good. Well the great news is that it doesn’t take much to up your game and start to enjoy even more success.

For example, poker’s always evolving with new ways to play, novel strategies and even new types of games emerging. So it’s well worth keeping abreast of the latest developments by regularly consulting respected online sites as well as devouring all the information you can on the internet. In many cases this information will be coming straight from the experts to you and there can’t be many games where so much first class advice and guidance is so readily available.

Of course, theory is all very well but it’s putting it into practice that really counts. So the best way to get better is to play more, especially on first class poker sites which offer a range of games to really broaden your experience.

An important part of this learning curve can be making yourself feel more at ease about not having to play every hand. Often this is one of the hardest habits to develop because each time you fold it seems like a wasted opportunity. But seasoned pros will tell you that patience and seizing not just any opportunity but only the right opportunities is the surest route to success. The issue is in recognising the difference and this is where experience really comes into play.

It’s also very important to remember that all though any game you play, online or in “real” life everyone else round the table will be scrutinising your every move to try and spot patterns, tells and other signs of how you’re playing. So, no matter what your natural instincts are, go against the grain from time to time. If you’re naturally cautious, be aggressive suddenly or, if you prefer a more forthright approach, then try your hand at looking a bit more reticent. It’s even better if you can work on some false tells to really get them guessing.

As you know, poker’s a game where keeping a level head is essential. So it’s also vital that you’re in the right frame of mind to play. If you’re angry or agitated things will only ever go badly for you in the long run – and drinking while you play is a real no-no.

Naturally, all of these suggestions are really only scratching the surface of how to become a better and more successful poker player – but they do form a solid foundation nevertheless. So put them all into play and before long you should start to see a marked improvement. Then it could be time to start thinking about booking those flights to Vegas . . .
