Kelly Minkin — the last woman standing in the World Series of Poker — has a connection to Milwaukee

Kelly Minkin has once again taken the World Series of Poker Main Event by storm.

For the second time in the last four years, she is the final woman in the Main Event and has a chance to walk away with the $8.8 million grand prize.

While Minkin has lived in Arizona for more than two decades, the star poker player has a Wisconsin connection.

She was born in Waukesha and grew up in Milwaukee before moving to Arizona with her family when she was a child.

Minkin lives in Phoenix and most recently worked at a law firm with a focus on medical malpractice defense and catastrophic personal injury.

She holds a bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Arizona. According to a story in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the 31-year-old from Tucson, Arizona, intended on being a surgeon but then switched course and went to law school.

She received her Juris Doctorate degree from Arizona Summit Law School in 2014 and played poker in her spare time.

And she became quite successful at it. Minkin's best finish at the WSOP Main Event was in 2015 when she took 29th. In total, she has accumulated $975,112 in live tournaments over the last several years.

As of Tuesday afternoon — Day 6 of the Main Event — Minkin is sitting in 51st place in the field of 73 players remaining and is part of one of the featured tables.

The $10,000 no-limit hold'em buy-in tournament began with 7,874 players on July 2. That is the second-most entries ever in the WSOP’s 49-year history.

The Main Event played at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, is expected to conclude on Saturday.
