Tony Miles is one game away from $8.8 million poker jackpot as he surges to No. 1

Former Tacoma resident Tony Miles rocketed from fourth to first place Friday as the table narrowed to just three players going into the final day of the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas.

He was in fourth place at the start of Friday’s round. The winner of Saturday’s final round takes home a $8.8 million paycheck.

Miles collected more than half (238.9 million) of the total number of chips in play at the event Friday. He took out 2009 champ Joe Cada on Friday.

“Friday’s action was defined by Tony Miles’ incredible surge into a commanding chip lead on the way down to the final three players,” wrote ESPN’s Tim Fiorvanti.

Miles is guaranteed to take home at least $3.75 million in the $10,000 buy-in No-limit Texas Hold ‘em World Championship, no matter how he does Saturday.

Miles, 32, and an alumnus of Tacoma’s Stadium High School, now lives in Florida.

Miles overcame addiction, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, on his way to becoming one of the word’s best poker players.

The final day of the world championship at the Rio Convention Center airs at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
