New Desert Diamond Casino West Valley opens Wednesday night. Here's what to expect
The new Desert Diamond Casino West Valley — with more than 1,100 slot machines, 36 poker-style tables and 48 blackjack-style tables — will open at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The $400-million, 1.2-million-square-foot casino, at 93rd and Northern avenues near Glendale's sports and entertainment district, will replace the neighboring casino that since 2015 has offered slot machines but no table games.
The current casino will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The new, bigger casino will be able to hold about 10,000 people.
All slot machines, table games and restaurants will be open and ready to go, Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise spokeswoman Treena Parvello said in a statement.
This will give northwest Valley residents a chance to play table games closer to home. The only other West Valley casino is Vee Quiva, near 51st Avenue on the Gila River Indian Reservation.
The Tohono O'odham Nation's new Desert Diamond Casino will include:
- More than 1,100 slot machines.
- 380 bingo seats.
- 36 poker-style tables.
- 48 blackjack-style tables.
- A massive bar with a second-story mezzanine overlooking the casino floor.
- A food court.
- A steakhouse.
- A sports bar.
- An Italian restaurant.
Plans for a resort, convention center
The tribe plans to start work on a full-service resort, convention space and possibly a concert venue on the site, but there is no construction timeline yet.
Once that phase is finished, the project's total footprint would be about 2.3 million square feet.
It's not yet clear what will happen to the existing casino, which was originally designed to be a warehouse. Casino staff use an off-site warehouse, so the existing building may be converted to an events center.
