Holyoke man indicted for cheating MGM Springfield out of $30,000 in alleged poker scheme

SPRINGFIELD - A Holyoke man bilked MGM Springfield out of more than $30,000 by distracting poker dealers, according to the state attorney general’s office.

Daniel Ruiz, 38, was indicted Friday by a Hampden County grand jury on one count of larceny and another of cheating and swindling, Attorney General Maura Healey announced.

Ruiz frequented the downtown casino over about three weeks in January and February, favoring Four-Card Poker tables, Healey’s office said. He allegedly devised a scheme to distract dealers in order to discreetly bump up his wagers when he determined he had a winning hand.

The scam was identified through a joint investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the attorney’s general’s office. Both agencies have investigators dedicated to uncovering and prosecuting illegal schemes at the state’s casinos.

Ruiz will be arraigned in Hampden Superior Court at a later date.
