Clubhouse Games ad reveals Mario-themed hanafuda and poker cards
Nintendo shared a new commercial today for Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. The chill advertisement shows off some of the games included in the collection, being Hanafuda, Speed, and Memory. Normally, I wouldn’t be the first to jump on the opportunity to tell you all about video game card games, but if you take a close look at the video, you’ll notice Mario details all over everything.

The showcase video from last week showed the classic cards, but today’s features the Nintendo-focused designs. This is pretty cool for a number of reasons. Putting Mario on these cards gives them a lot of personality, especially in the case of something like Memory, which had a pretty big presence in Super Mario Bros. 3. However, this also elevates Clubhouse Games from a lazy Sunday simulator to a celebration of Nintendo’s past.
The Big N is the oldest video game company going in a sense, having been founded in 1889 for the purpose of producing Hanafuda cards. Nintendo still makes classic Hanafuda cards as well as ones with Mario elements on them, complete with Napoleon on the former’s box and Mario Bonaparte on the latter’s. You can get them easily even in the West.
While I don’t think that this makes Clubhouse Games a must-purchase on the Switch, I know many people who may want to expose their children to these classics. I can see this being how some kids learn to play chess or poker, or even less common games like mancala and, yes, Hanafuda. The addition of Mario and friends is more like icing on this cake.
