Death of woman found burned in Michigan park could be linked to her pro poker career

WHITE LAKE TOWNSHIP, MI – The death of a woman found burned in a Southeast Michigan park could be related to her career as a professional poker player, The Associated Press reports.

The death of 33-year-old Susie Zhao, known as Susie Q to other players, could be related to her travels on the poker circuit, said Det. Lt. Chris Hild, of the White Lake Township police.

"We have to determine whether or not this is a cover-up or this may be some sort of retaliatory incident because of her profession," Hild said.

He declined to say more about how she died, saying the investigation is ongoing, the report said.

Zhao’s body was discovered by a passerby on July 13 at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Oakland County. She had returned from Los Angeles to live with family about a month earlier, the report said.

She had winnings of at least $187,441, according to the World Series of Poker website, including $73,805 at an event in 2012.

“I proficiently play high stakes poker for a living. Its kinda weird because I’m a girl,” Zhao’s Twitter profile states.

Her death made national news, and friends have expressed their sadness via social media.

The FBI was called in to assist in the investigation, meeting with White Lake Township Police to plan it on July 21.

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to call Hild at 248-698-4404.
